What a day this will be. I would not be surprised that based on the outcome of the election that riots would pursue. I won’t be surprised to see hate spewed on social media. I won’t be surprised to see fear being driven into many for a whole slew of different reasons.
Honestly, it breaks my heart.
Yesterday, Governor Baker made some very strong statements that will have an impact on restaurants, relationships, gyms, schools, COVID responses…pretty much anywhere you look. For some, those statements will be a huge win. For others, it will bury them.
And so I get to find myself in a pretty tough spot: I will have to make certain decisions that some will love and others will hate. I can imagine many others, namely small business owners, are in a similar boat.
The most challenging part isn’t about the love or hate of the decisions.
One of our pillars written on our wall is “Community.” A member of our 9:30 class has very astutely made a note of our most recent shirts that we made. On the wall of the gym, reading left to right, Community comes in the middle of our three pillars (consistency and no excuses on the ends). On our most recently made T-shirts, it’s first. Did my wife do that on purpose? I don’t know. But what I do believe is that whether you love or hate the outcome at the day’s end, whether you love or hate how someone functions in this world (me, a neighbor, a family member, a colleague) that we can ultimately root ourselves in the community of humanity. Agree, disagree, love the idea, hate the thought…but the people. Let’s root ourselves in the people. In the community. We start (continue) ripping that apart and it will be a long, uphill and most likely lost battle.
May today provide opportunities to agree to fight for each other.
